People are the economy and these are now suffering the dramatic effects, not of a nuclear war, but of a microscopic but rather dangerous enemy which has already shown its impacts on the stock markets which are mirroring the fear in all of us. All countries are progressively experiencing slowdowns and among them Italy, the 3rd largest European manuf- acturing country, and one of the largest global exporters of Lift products where for fear of the spread of Covid-19 many companies are forced to downsize their organiza- tions. It must be recognized that those who are paying the immediate consequences are, above all, the thousands of employees in our organizations, including the numerous producers of lift components, who represent a soft spot in our supply chain. We, as Europeans and suppliers of the transportation system that moves over 2 Billion people daily worldwide have an obligation, if we want to continue to benefit from the peace and freedom we had enjoyed in the last 75 years – we need, more than ever, to stay united in the fight, as better times will have to find us prepared. Like in a war, it is difficult for many to estimate the extent of the damage, given that the international emergency of the spread of Covid-19 is still ongoing, but this situation has shown how weak we can be in front of the unexpected, as some companies will not survive the shock. Probably this is a sign that we all should slow down our convulsive rhythms and appreciate more the time to make things properly and with the right quality, in order to keep safety always at the forefront of our actions. Roberto Zappa President of the European Lift Association (ELA) I ch bin mir sicher, dass sich zum Zeitpunkt der Veröf- fentlichung dieses Artikels die Gesundheitssituation weltweit verschlechtert hat und die Auswirkungen der Pandemie unser „normales Leben“ nicht nur jetzt, sondern auch in der Zukunft radikal verändern werden. Menschen sind das Rückgrat der Wirtschaft. Und diese leiden nun unter dramatischen Auswirkungen, die nicht etwa von einem Atomkrieg herrühren, sondern von einem mikroskopisch kleinen, aber ziemlich gefährlichen Feind. Auch die Börsen, die die Angst in uns allen widerspiegeln, wurden bereits erschüttert. Alle Länder erleben nach und nach einen Abschwung, so beispielsweise auch Italien – der drittgrößte europä- ische Hersteller und einer der größten Exporteure von Aufzugprodukten weltweit. Hier sind viele Unternehmen aus Angst vor der Verbreitung von Covid-19 gezwungen, ihre Betriebe zu verkleinern. Wir müssen uns darüber im Klaren sein, dass vor allem die Tausende von Mitarbeitern in unseren Unternehmen diejenigen sind, die letztlich die unmittelbaren Konsequenzen tragen müssen. Dies betrifft auch die zahlreichen Hersteller von Aufzugkomponenten, die eine Schwachstelle unserer Lieferkette sind. Als Europäer und als Garanten eines Beförderungssys- tems, das tagtäglich mehr als zwei Milliarden Menschen weltweit bewegt, haben wir eine Verpflichtung: Wenn wir weiterhin von dem Frieden und der Freiheit profitieren wollen, die wir in den letzten 75 Jahren genossen haben, dann müssen wir mehr denn je im Kampf vereint bleiben – damit wir vorbereitet sind, wenn wieder bessere Zeiten anbrechen. Wie in einem Krieg ist es für viele schwierig, das Ausmaß der Schäden abzuschätzen, da der durch die Ausbreitung von Covid-19 verursachte internationale Notstand noch andauern wird. Doch diese Situation hat uns bereits jetzt gezeigt, wie schwach wir angesichts des Unerwarteten sein können: Einige Unternehmen werden diesen Schock nicht überleben. Wahrscheinlich ist dies ein Zeichen dafür, dass wir alle unsere hektischen Lebensrhythmus zu entschleunigen. Stattdessen sollten wir uns die Zeit zu nehmen, die Dinge mit Ruhe und Vernunft anzugehen – damit die Sicherheit immer an erster Stelle unseres Handelns steht. Dr. Ing.
